The Godwin Obla Foundation has commissioned the Judith Ogwa Obla Memorial Kidney Centre at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo (FUHSTHO), alongside the launch of a ₦40 million student endowment fund. The centre, equipped with world-class dialysis and treatment facilities, was established in memory of the late Mrs. Judith Ogwa Obla.

At the commissioning on April 17, 2023, FUHSO Vice Chancellor, Prof. Innocent Ujah, described the project as a landmark contribution to healthcare in Benue State and Nigeria at large. He emphasized that the centre will provide critical services for patients with kidney disease, supported by modern equipment and skilled medical staff. He further highlighted the Foundation’s earlier interventions, including scholarships, infrastructural projects at St. Francis College, and the construction of Emmanuel Obla Hall at Wesley High School, Otukpo.

The ₦40 million endowment, also launched at the ceremony, establishes four prizes in the College of Medicine:

  • Overall Best Graduating Student (named after Dr. Edwin Idoko Obe)

  • Best Graduating Student in Surgery

  • Best Graduating Student in Internal Medicine (named after Joseph Elagbaje Obla Snr)

  • Best Graduating Student in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (named after Chief Godwin Odumu Obla, SAN)

Each prize is valued at ₦10 million, with the aim of encouraging academic excellence and supporting future medical leaders.

The centre itself houses six new dialysis machines, intensive care facilities, diagnostic and consulting rooms, internet connectivity via Starlink, alternative power supply, and accessibility features for persons with disabilities. According to the Foundation, it will serve as a hub for treatment, training, and research in nephrology.

In his remarks, Chief Godwin Obla, SAN, explained that the project was born out of personal experience following the passing of his wife due to kidney failure. He noted that while she had access to first-class facilities abroad, the lack of such resources in Nigeria inspired him to create a centre of excellence that would bring lifesaving care closer to home.

The commissioning was witnessed by the University Governing Council, government officials, religious leaders, and community representatives. Many praised the Foundation for its generosity and long-term commitment to education and healthcare.

The Foundation also pledged to continue reviewing and expanding its collaboration with FUHSO, with plans to consider establishing a Centre for Urological Studies in the future.

This intervention is part of the Foundation’s broader mission to improve access to healthcare, education, and community development, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
